There are many things that can be done to help your community and your country, while at the same time reducing reliance upon the corrupt institutions who got us in this situation.
Banking and Loans
Rather than banking with Bank of America, Chase, Citigroup or any of the other institutions responsible for much of the economic damage and mayhem, as well as ruining the lives of many, Move Your Money into credit unions; many credit unions offer all the same capabilties and conveniences that banks do, while also keeping money in the local economy. In addition, there are usually no fees associated with many actions, and many local credit union ATMs will be usable for free.
Food And Consumption
Instead of buying your food from a chain grocery store, and companies like Monsanto, buy it from a local farmers market or co-op grocery store whenever possible. The produce is fresh and local, the farmers get paid a fair wage, and you support your community. If you’re interested in making an even bigger difference, you can reduce the amount of meat and animal products you eat, as animals require far more resources to grow, support and keep healthy.

Energy Saving and Independence
While not currently a complete solution, Solar Energy holds potential for savings on electricity bills, reducing waste and pollution, and reducing reliance on corporate power-grids. Solar water heating can also be useful, saving a great deal of money in the long term. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, ‘On average, if you install a solar water heater, your water heating bills should drop 50%–80%. Also, because the sun is free, you’re protected from future fuel shortages and price hikes.’
Do note, however, that in some areas setting solar water heating or solar panels up may be against public ordinance. Check first before commencing construction.

Conclusion
In the future, to retain our freedoms, we’ll need to rely less and less upon the 1% — we don’t need them, and they will only have as much power as we choose to give them. It needs to start today.
